Your ROAS looks great. Your retention is flat. And you cannot work out why growth has stalled. The answer is usually that your team is reading one metric closely and ignoring the one that actually predicts where you are headed.
ROAS tells you how fast you are moving. LTV tells you whether you are moving in the right direction. Most performance teams optimize for one of them. They need both, because the two measure different things.
ROAS is revenue earned from ads divided by budget spent. It gives fast feedback, which makes it ideal for day-to-day creative and bid testing. Its weakness is its window, since it usually reflects only a short period after install.
LTV is the average revenue a user generates over their entire lifetime in your app. It is a slower signal, and it is the only one that tells you whether the users you are paying to acquire are worth acquiring in the first place.
Take two campaigns. The first posts 4x ROAS on Day 7 and falls to 1.2x by Day 30. The second sits at 2.5x on Day 7 but holds strong retention through Day 30. On a short-window dashboard the first looks like the winner. In reality it is a leaking bucket: the users arrived cheap and churned before they paid back. The second is a growth engine.
Teams keep optimizing toward short-term ROAS because it is fast to measure. The problem is that users who look cheap on Day 7 often disappear by Day 14, and the metric that flagged them as a success never sees them leave.
Retention is the connective tissue between ROAS and LTV. A user who stays keeps generating revenue, which lifts LTV, and justifies a higher acquisition cost, which protects ROAS over a longer window. Optimize for retention and both metrics follow. Optimize for Day 7 ROAS alone and you will keep buying users who flatter your dashboard and starve your growth.
ROAS and LTV are not competing numbers. They are two readings of the same engine, one short and one long. Align your team around both, use ROAS for speed and LTV for direction, and judge every campaign by whether the users behind the numbers are still there a month later.
